SAFE Update - November

Posted: November 09, 2016

SAFE students at EdRevThe Student Advocates For Education (SAFE) program had a great October. We have some particularly exciting news about the Silicon Valley SAFE chapter which was awarded a grant from the Atkinson Foundation. This funding will go towards their panel efforts and preparation for EdRev Up. We are very grateful to the Atkinson Foundation for their interest in SAFE’s mission and values and we are honored to be among their recipients. It is wonderful to be recognized as a positive enrichment program that serves San Mateo County LD youth as they strive to attain their highest potential in life. With this momentum we want to reach out to anyone who has other suggestions for where our SAFE program could find potential funding sources. Please email any opportunities that you have to Kina at kina@parentseducationnetwork.org.

Another exciting development is the increased interest in organizing an East Bay SAFE group. With PEN’s East Bay events receiving great support throughout the fall season it only makes sense for SAFE to join in the growth! We have a potential location in the works and now we hope to find facilitators and advisors for the EB SAFE chapter. We are looking for volunteers who have a passion for supporting students with learning and attention differences; who are connected to a network of local resources such as learning specialists, schools and students; who have experience working collaboratively with student groups and clubs; who have expertise in education and who have a strength-based view of students with LD.

SAFE is a community of students with learning differences who meet regularly and learn about personal and community advocacy as it relates to their and others’ learning differences. Students who attend SAFE meetings learn how to speak to their teachers and classmates about how they learn and think and they also train for and participate in panel discussions throughout the community where they talk about their experiences with having a learning difference.  If you have or know a student between the ages of 13 to 19 who may be interested in joining one of the branches of SAFE, please email Kina at kina@parentseducationnetwork.org. Current groups include Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Sacramento, Monterey.

Finally, we are updating the SAFE section of the website. Expect more progress in the coming months!
