Our Year in Review!

Posted: June 01, 2015

PEN Board member Tamara Centeno with Gavin NewsomDear Members,

As another school year draws to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to share an overview of the progress made by PEN this year.

Since 2003, PEN has become the Bay Area's premier grass roots resource for parents, professionals and students affected by learning and attention differences.

Our unique programs provide educational opportunities, face-to-face community, and sharing of knowledge and resources. Our approach remains collaborative, student-centered and strengths-based.

2014-2015 has been a critical year for us both in terms of our exciting national expansion, and our local programming. Some of our most significant successes this year were:

Partnership

  • We became one of the 15 founding nonprofit partners in an innovative digital resource for parents of students struggling with Learning and Attention Issues. Understood.org offers parents personalized resources, free daily access to experts, a secure online community, practical tips and more. PEN facilitates parent-to-parent connections in the online community, and provides on-the-ground, face-to-face connection for parents within the Understood network.
  • Understood became a partner in the production of EdRev 2015

Geographical Expansion

  • Three of our regional Affiliates - Phoenix, Sacramento, Silicon Valley – ran their first full year of programming
  • Two new Affiliates launched in Los Angeles and Dallas, TX
  • Expanded our Bay Area presence to the East Bay with a well-attended Assistive Technology workshop
  • SAFE (Student Advisors for Education) program started groups in Sacramento and Monterey, CA

National Office

  • A renewed, energized board, drawing 7 new members from various industries.
  • Launched a completely redesigned PEN website
  • We welcomed some amazing new staff members. A professional and engaged team is in place to support PEN’s growth in the coming year
  • We held a successful first annual Fall Fundraiser Luncheon in San Francisco
  • The 7th annual EdRev (Education Revolution), EdRev 2015: Reimagine the Learning Journey on April 25th, in partnership with Understood. Featuring keynote speaker, California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, as well as workshop presentations by Dr. Fumiko Hoeft and Dr. Glenn Elliott. Over 2,000 attended.

San Francisco & Silicon Valley Programming

  • A banner year of speaker programming, featuring an impressive line-up of prominent speakers including Rick LaVoie, Dr. Robert Brooks, Dr. Jo Boaler, and Nancy Mather.
  • Our first membership from a public school district!
  • Launched a monthly parent drop-in group in San Francisco, in collaboration with the Pathways Institute
  • SAFE students participated in a Student Voice Panel in NYC, and presented an increased number of panels at venues including SxSW, Google, San Ramon PTA Regional Conference, Alameda Unified School District and USF.

We are so thankful for our 2014-2015 successes and for the support from parents, students, teachers, educators and community members which makes this possible.

We wish you all a restful summer and look forward to seeing you at PEN events in the new school year!
